OUR STORY

We are Ken & Ash Pratten, the husband-and-wife-team behind The So Cal Mushroom Co. Ken is originally from New Zealand and Ash was born and raised in Southern California. Our farming journey began in 2011 with very little money and a desire to own our own produce company.

In the beginning, we experimented with growing everything from basil and artichokes to other vegetables, searching for something that felt like the right fit. Eventually, we discovered gourmet mushrooms—and that changed everything. We started with just one variety, the Blue Oyster mushroom, growing out of a small shop on Ash’s parents’ property.

It didn’t stay small for long. We quickly outgrew that first space and eventually moved the farm to the property we’re on today. Over the years, what began with a single variety of oyster mushroom has grown into a farm producing six to seven different varieties of specialty gourmet mushrooms.

The journey from that little shop to where we are today has been anything but easy. There have been countless trials and errors, long days, failed crops, lessons learned the hard way, and plenty of figuring things out as we went. But through it all, we kept growing—both mushrooms and our farm.

More than a decade later, we’re still hands-on in what we do and proud of how far we’ve come. The So Cal Mushroom Co. was built from the ground up by the two of us, and we’re grateful to now share the mushrooms we grow with restaurants, retailers, chefs, and families throughout Southern California and beyond.
